The port of Astakos is considered an important link between the mainland of Aitoloakarnania and the Ionian Islands. It is strategically located on the west coast of Greece, close to the main international shipping lines. It provides a unique opportunity to initiate trade relations between the European Union and the East. At the same time, it connects the Adriatic, Balkan and Black Sea regions.

Also, the port of Astakos is connected by ferry to the neighboring islands of Kefalonia and Ithaca.
