The civil airport of Alexandroupolis “Democritus” is located at a distance of about 7,0km east of the city of Alexandroupolis in the Prefecture of Evros in Thrace (North-Eastern Greece).
The airport is accessible via E90 national Road and also via Egnatia Road.
The airport was named “Democritus” in honour of the ancient atomic philosopher who was born in Avdira, a small village near the city of Xanthi in the Xanthi Prefecture in Thrace.
The airport buildings (terminal and administration) were completed in 2011 and the airport terminal building cover a surface of more thwn 8.500m2.
